The national flag of the United States consists of 13 equal horizontal stripes with a blue rectangle in the canton that is referred to as the union. There are 50 stars arranged in 9 offset horizontal rows. The 50 stars on the flag represent the 50 states of America. The 50 star flag was ordered in 1959. It was adopted in 1960. It is the longest used version of the United States flag. The 13 stripes represent the 13 British colonies that declared their independence. They went on to secure their victory in the American Revolutionary War.
