Robert Todd Lincoln was a wealthy businessman, car company president and statesman. He is the eldest son of President Abraham Lincoln. Robert Lincoln served as United States Secretary of War. He also served on the staff of General Ulysses Grant as a captain in the Union Army in the last weeks of the American Civil War.
Robert Todd Lincoln was often spoken of as a possible candidate for national office, including the presidency. However, he never took steps to mount a campaign. He served as Secretary of War in the administration of James Garfield, continuing under Chester Arthur. He also served shrewdly as president of the Pullman Car Company.
Robert Lincoln was born in Springfield, IL. He resided in Washington, DC, and Manchester, Vermont. He was one of the nation’s most influential men.
