CELEBRATING AND HONORING THE BLACK HISTORY MONTH

CELEBRATING AND HONORING THE BLACK HISTORY MONTH

Black History Month is celebrated every February by events, special exhibits and educational programs in schools, libraries, museums and workplaces in America. It honors the contributions of Black Americans and was initiated by Carter G Woodson to ensure Black history was included in American education. President Gerald Ford officially recognized Black History Month, calling it an opportunity to honor often-neglected accomplishments. Black History Month highlights contributions to American history and culture with annual themes that are set by the Association for the Study of African American Life and History. The theme of this year is A Century of Black History Commemorations. The observance serves as a time to focus Black culture and contributions while encouraging ongoing education. People usually celebrate Black History Month by supporting black-owned businesses, educating yourself on African-American history, celebrating black culture, trying black recipes, etc. Finally, African American history is important because it encourages better citizenship. It emphasizes the ties that bind together individuals, communities, and generations. It illuminates the struggles to redefine and expand constitutional and civil rights. Happy Black History Month to every one! Let's take this time to honor the achievements, acknowledge the challenges, and commit to building a wonderful future.
