Joseph Clifford Montana Jr was born in June, 1956. He is an American former professional football quarterback who played in the National Football League/NFL for 16 seasons. He earned the nicknames Joe Cool and the Comeback Kid for his ability to calmly bring the 49ers to victory from the brink of a loss during the final moments of the game. He was the first player to be named the Super Bowl Most Valuable Player/MVP three times. He also holds Super Bowl career records for most passes without an interception. In 1993, Joe was traded to the Kansas City Chiefs, where he played for his last seasons and led the franchise to its first American Football Conference Championship Game. He was inducted to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Throughout his 16 years in the league, Montana threw for 40,551 yards. He won the NFL Comeback Player of the Year Award after suffering a severe back injury during week one. He also was named the NFL Most Valuable Player. He had the highest passer rating in the National Football Conference/NFC five times. In 1999, editors at The Sporting News ranked him third on their list of Football's hundred Greatest Players. Also in 1999, ESPN named him the 25th greatest athlete. In 2006, Sports Illustrated rated him the number-one clutch quarterback in league history. After his football career, he became a venture capitalist through his firm. He appears as the character Joe Clifford in the NFL Network's Joe's Diner television.
